Chapter OneEDUCATION AND THESIGNIFICANCE OF LIFEWhen one travels around the world, one notices to what an extraordinary degree human nature is the same, whether in India or America, in Europe or Australia. This is especially true in colleges and universities. We are turning out, as if through a mould, a type of human being whose chief interest is to find security, to become somebody important, or to have a good time with as little thought as possible.Conventional education makes independent thinking ex-tremely difficult. Conformity leads to mediocrity. To bedifferent from the group or to resist environment is not easyand is often risky as long as we worship success. The urgeto be successful, which is the pursuit of reward whether inthe material or in the so-called spiritual sphere, the searchfor inward or outward security, the desire for comfort -- thiswhole process smothers discontent, puts an end to spontaneity and breeds fear; and fear blocks the intelligent understanding of life. Pressestimmen

""Education and the Significance of Life "is extremely though-provoking and most refreshing. This book is not to be just read and put aside: it is to be deeply pondered."-- "The Theosophist""Here is a remarkable philosophy of education and of peace...."Education and the Significance of Life "is an excellent book, one that should be read carefully by parents and teachers."-- "Fellowship""The reader is given in one paragraph, often in one sentence, enough to keep him exploring, questioning, thinking for days. In this sense, "Education and the Significance of Life "is both creative and challenging...the greatest value of this book lies in Krishnamurti's insight, both psychological and mystical, into man himself and his relationships."-- Anne Morrow Lindbergh
