He has translated from the Irish The Astrakhan Cloak, by Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill and, in addition, has written two operas (Vera of Las Vegas; Shining Brow), two plays (Six Honest Serving Men; Monkeys, which was broadcast by the BBC in 1989), and three books for children. His work is represented in such major anthologies of Irish and British poetry as The Penguin Book of Contemporary British Poetry, The Penguin Book of Contemporary Irish Poetry, as well as The Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry (Second Edition). His work has earned him the T.S. Eliot Prize, the Sir Geoffrey Faber Memorial Award (twice), a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, and the Eric Gregory Award.
