Photonic Crystals details recent progress in the study of photonic crystals, ranging from fundamental aspects to up-to-date applications, in one unified treatment. It covers most of the worldwide frontier fields in photonic crystals, including up-to-date fabrication techniques, recent and future technological applications, and our basic understanding of the various optical properties of photonic crystals. Brand-new theoretical and experimental data are also presented. The book is intended for graduate course students and specialists actively working in this field, but it will also be useful for newcomers, especially the extensive chapter dealing with fundamental aspects of photonic crystals, which paves the way to a full appreciation of the other topics addressed.
Introduction.- Survey of Fundamental Features of Photonic Crystals.- Theory I: Basic Aspects of Photonic Bands.- Theory II: Advanced Topics of Photonic Crystals.- Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystals.- Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Slabs.- Three-Dimensional Photonic Crystals.- Other Types of Photonic Crystals.- Spectroscopic Methods for Characterization.- Interaction between Light and Matter in Photonic Crystals.- Photonic Crystal Devices.- Application to Ultrafast Optical Planar Integrated Circuit.- Photonic Crystals in the Terahertz Region.- Perspective.- Appendix A: Reciprocal Lattic Vector and Discrete Wavevector.- Appendix B: Phase Shift of Light and Density of State.

From the reviews:
"Photonic crystals have gained a continuously growing interest from researchers all over the world. ... The outcome of the project, plus some relevant results by other Japanese researchers, is presented, mostly for a readership of specialists and postgraduates. ... Besides a useful reading for graduate students, who plan to start working in this field, or specialists, who want to extend their knowledge, I consider the book as a mean to convey more awareness ... to the study and development of photonic crystals." (Dr. M. Agio, Contemporary Physics, Vol. 46 (6), 2005)
"This book is intended to primarily report on the research outcome on a Japanese research project started in 1998. ... The articles mostly emphasize experimental works for specialists in this field, but also include the distinguished theoretical works done in Japan. The book is intended for graduate students and specialists actively working in this field, but it will also be useful for newcomers." (Peter Kreiner, Optik: Zeitschrift für Licht- und Elektronenoptik, Vol. 116, 2005)
