A mysterious tarot card reader appears at a fundraiser and informs Dasha Marusov that she is "not living the life she was meant to live." Dasha is too busy to take it seriously, however, the tarot reader is tenacious. Dasha wonders whose life she is living if not her own. She's about to find out when she is suddenly whisked away through time from San Francisco to St. Petersburg in 1918.
While growing up, Dasha and her two younger sisters were told stories about the Russian royal family, particularly the fourth daughter, Anastasia. Wild tales of her kidnapping or escaping Russian soldiers to start a new life elsewhere have circulated for years. When Dasha realizes she can't get back home to San Francisco, she decides to trust fellow American, Alex McKain, who informs her that her grandmother's stories were true. He works for the Bureau of Time Menders, an organization that fixes small glitches in history. Anastasia is alive, however, if she dies with the rest of her family, Dasha's family will never exist. Anastasia is being chased by a dark anti-time travel organization that wants every remaining Russian noble killed and out of the way.
Along the way, Dasha will be imprisoned by Bolshevik soldiers, encounter the evil priest, Rasputin, and become friends with a Chicago gangster who has a heart of gold and a generous wallet. And just maybe, she'll meet the love of her life.
