Beschreibung

This is a fascinating, unpretentious, and highly readable memoir of Irishman Bill Long's serendipitous meetings with a host of kindred spirits, including some of the most famous writers of our time. In this collection of essays, written with rich humor and unabashed affection for those he briefly befriended, Long captures his meetings, encounters, and glimpses of the famous. He recounts how, as a child, he crossed paths with T.H. White in an Irish pub. In 1960s London, he swapped childhood memories of Waterford with "old yellow gloves", Raymond Chandler, attended many of Chandler's parties, and listened intently one day as the writer sketched out a hypothetical Marlowe novel set in Waterford. In Kentucky in the 60s, he stays at Father Louis's -- Thomas Merton -- abbey, where he discuses Joyce with the great cleric and author, and meets Merton's fellow-guest, "Skinny" -- Erskine Caldwell. In Sag Harbor, he drinks whiskey with John Steinbeck in his "shack", while they talk about White and Malory. In 1969, he has a memorable lunch in New York City with Henry Miller, where they discuss the mutual admiration that Merton and Miller had for each other's work. And then, there are his lunch with David Niven and attendance at one of Niven's famous parties; his friendship and meetings with Aeron Thomas, Dylan's only daughter; breakfast with Robert Frost; a midnight encounter with Katherine Anne Porter in a snowy New York City; and teaching students in a classroom with Seamus Heaney.
