Beschreibung

That favorite locum has been ingratiating readers and viewers for years with his larky procedures in Doctor in the House, At Sea, etc., etc. Now more seriously, not too seriously, without much professional courtesy but with a great deal of savvy, he tells a Forsyte Saga of the scalpel and suture covering some thirty years in the life and career of a plastic surgeon, Graham Trevose. A branch of medicine just beginning in the '20's when Trevose is rather disreputably known as a beauty doctor. An opportunist, he also makes a social marriage to a Lord's daughter and is primarily interested in fees. Theatrical in the amphitheatre, brash, bad-tempered, self-centered, Trevose charms most women, incurs the animus of many others, neglects his ailing wife who attempts suicide and is eventually put away. In the second part of what was originally two separately published volumes, World War II is underway and Trevose devotes himself to the best part of his specialty - reconstructive surgery - and while acquitting himself brilliantly, again is disliked by certain people, behaves in a rather derelict fashion toward the young girl who loves him, finally straightens out in all respects. . . . This works up a great deal of clinical material without exploiting it, provides some Tatler touches on the period, and is, all in all, an eminently practiced, astringently entertaining, performance.
