Elfriede has only known the nameless mountain town that she was born in. Rampant disease and travelers claiming that her beloved twin sister, Helene, to be a divine Saintess to the Sun goddess are just a couple of the problems they face on a day-to-day basis. So, she's spent her life learning how to survive. Hunting game, mining the precious iron ore that keeps their town running and protecting her sister from the con artists that seek to whisk her away. However, only three days after marrying her childhood friend, disaster strikes. Elfriede finds herself widowed and embarking on a journey to fulfill her final promise to her late husband. She seeks to find a place where she and her twin sister can live their lives out in peace, far from the despair that haunted them back home.
As soon as they arrive they're approached by Heiden, a barbarian from the far northern region of Kä lteste. He asks Elfriede for her help. However his request requires her to leave her sister behind in an unfamiliar city by those who would use her. When the lives of innocent people are weighed against the last of her family, Elfriede must choose which is more important to her.
