Liza L. Hernandez went through breast cancer at 37 years old at the most stressful time in her life. She was caring for ill parents, raising three children, working, and going to school at night. Shortly after diagnosis, she had a bilateral mastectomy and breast reconstruction with implants that lasted 16 years. In 2021, at age 54, Liza had the implants removed and not replaced. She chose a procedure called Aesthetic Flat Closure (also known as Going Flat). She discovered after surgery that her breastbone was protruding, she had to learn to live with unexpected changes of her body once again, both physically and mentally. Ultimately, she found a way to have breasts without future surgeries. She is a beacon of hope who survived an illness that reshaped her body and life.
