Madagascar is often called the 'eighth continent' and not because it is the fourth largest island on earth, but because a very independent nature has evolved here. BirdLife International declares seven different areas to be EBAs (Endemic Bird Areas) where birds of restricted distribution are found. It also declares 84 areas to be IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Area), areas that are important for the conservation of bird life on a global level.
