Die Inschriftenüberlieferung der Stadt Meißen, die dieser zweiteilige Band in einer kommentierten Edition vorstellt, reicht vom 13. Jahrhundert bis zum Jahr 1650. Ihre Schwerpunkte sind die Bischofskirche im 13. /14. Jahrhundert, die fürstliche Residenz im 15. /16. Jahrhundert und die Bürgerstadt im 16. /17. Jahrhundert. Dominiert wird der Bestand von fast 350 Grabmälern. Eine kleine Zahl an Vasa sacra bezeugt Stiftungen an Kirchen. Daneben spiegeln Gebäudeinschriften die Phasen intensiver Bautätigkeit wieder und geben wie keine andere Quellengattung vielfältigen Einblick in die Lebenswelt von Adligen, Domgeistlichen und Meißner Bürgern.
The inscriptional tradition of the city of Meissen, which this two-part volume presents in an annotated edition, extends from the 13th century to 1650, focussing on the episcopal church in the 13th/14th century, the princely residence in the 15th/16th century and the town centre in the 16th/17th century. The collection is dominated by almost 350 tombs. A small number of vasa sacra bear witness to donations to churches. In addition, building inscriptions reflect the phases of intensive building activity and provide a diverse insight into the lives of nobles, cathedral clergy and Meissen citizens like no other source genre.
