Tully Gale in "Night Riders" has been a drifter much of his life -- moon rider, as he regards it. He came to Splinter Rock to see Louise Bentham, the schoolteacher he had met on a stage. But Louise had inherited Two Hump Ranch, the wealthiest cattle ranch in the district, and that puts her out of his reach. Gale is encouraged to homestead a half-section of Public Domain land with a good water supply. This, however, puts him at odds with Nick Daimler, the ruthless foreman of Two Hump, as well as Two Hump's owner, Louise. The explosive situation is further complicated when Tully observes a clandestine meeting that convinces him that Daimler is out to ruin Two Hump so Louise will abandon it and he can take it over. Tully is determined to stop Daimler if it's the last thing he ever does.
