Die Premiere dieser herausragenden Produktion von Händels Ariodante inszeniert von David Alden und dirigiert von Ivor Bolton wurde von der Presse stürmisch gefeiert. Alden hatte die opera seria in einen erotisch aufgeladenen Albtraum voller Lust, Betrug und zerstörter Unschuld verwandelt und die hochkarätige Besetzung um Ann Murray, Joan Rodgers und Gwynne Howell verhalf diesem überraschend modernen Drama zu einem barocken Triumph (The Times). Angesiedelt um 1735 behandelt das Werk eine Episode Ariosts, in der die Tochter des schottischen Königs der Untreue gegenüber ihrem zukünftigen Ehemann angeklagt wird. Die zentrale Problematik rund um Eifersucht und falsche Identitäten entwickelt sich in einem dichten Netzt familiärer Beziehungen und löst extreme Emotionen aus. Diese Emotionen vermag Händel in einer derart meisterlichen Art und Weise musikalisch umzusetzen, dass Ariodante als einer der Höhepunkte seines Schaffens betrachtet werden kann.
