This book before you is nothing but a humble attempt to traverse the paths of history, where light at times retreats behind shadows, and truth becomes entangled with legend in the narrative of the Catholic papacy and the Apostolic See.
We wrote it with the ink of the heart before setting it down in actual ink; between every line a sigh, and between every paragraph the sorrow of a researcher burdened by the weight of responsibility and troubled by the demands of truth.
And if its language seems obscure in places, or its style marked by certain flaws, or if praise or blame has slipped into its pages-without intent or bias-then that is not of us, nor of our scholarly integrity. God forbid that we should aim to mislead the reader or obscure their insight. Our sole purpose was to transmit the information as it was, with the honesty of one who holds truth in one hand and doubt in the other-hoping to enrich the library with a source that does not run dry, and to place, in the hands of the scholar and the student, another stone in the edifice of knowledge.
Together, we shall trace the lives of those who sat upon the papal throne, one after the other-from Saint Peter to the current pope. In this procession, we shall encounter those who ascended to sainthood, and those whose lives ended in martyrdom beneath the weight of persecution. We will journey through shifting times marked by dominance and decline, by faith and doubt; and we shall traverse distant lands, from Rome to the edges of the empire, where the Church was building its history amid the storms.
And when darkness deepens and vision narrows, we find no refuge more honest than the footnotes-not to withdraw into their shadows, nor to hide behind their parentheses, but to return to them as the thirsty return to a spring. We turn to them to unravel the obscure and clarify the ambiguous-in a sincere effort to write a history that neither embellishes nor wounds, but leaves the past to testify for itself: silent in its words, resounding in its truth, at times painful, and at times tearful.
