Shortlisted for the International Booker Prize.

From the bestselling Japanese author of Breasts and Eggs and international literary sensation Mieko Kawakami, comes a sharp and illuminating novel about a fourteen-year-old boy subjected to relentless bullying.

In Heaven, a fourteen-year-old boy is tormented for having a lazy eye. Instead of resisting, he chooses to suffer in silence. The only person who understands what he is going through is a female classmate, Kojima, who experiences similar treatment at the hands of her bullies. Providing each other with immeasurable consolation at a time in their lives when they need it most, the two young friends grow closer than ever. But what, ultimately, is the nature of a friendship when your shared bond is terror?

Unflinching yet tender, sharply observed, intimate and multi-layered, this simple yet profound novel stands as yet another dazzling testament to Mieko Kawakami's uncontainable talent.

Mieko Kawakami my bew favorite author!!!

I really can't tell you what it is, but I read Heaven more than a year ago and I can't stop recommending it!!!! I don't think it is the story in its self that makes it so..... unforgettable (for a lack of better word). The story is reather short explaind. A boy and a girl who are getting bullied both for there own reasons. Slowly they find comfort in each other, and what seams like a wunderful friendship or possibly romance forms between the two. The things they have to endure are gruesome, but where as the boy hates and dreads his situation and just really wants it to and, his new found friend dose not feel the same.... Warning there is pretty graphic description of assault, but if you don't mind that the writing is mesmerizing. It gives an inside to bullying that seams so gruesome that it shouldn't be nearly possible, but that's fare from true and personally really opend my eyes to the extent of it. But if you don't mind that it is a short read and Mieko Kawakamis writing is just immaculate
