1917
The Allies continue to press eastward against Axis forces. Nurse Lydia Blackwell-Finney, Doctor Simon Finney, Doctor Marcus Lovell, and their faithful dog Abril make their way back to America, having honorably fulfilled their military service.
Returning to the States, they plan to build their lives in Pittsburgh, where the three spiritual rivers of "faith, love, and charity" will converge. But Marcus must first travel to Rochester, hoping to reconcile with the woman he failed in France, the mother of the daughter he's never met.
As Lydia and Simon start their life together and prepare for the birth of their first baby, Lydia navigates the challenges of a medical system, not yet ready for her battlefield-honed skills. And Simon, still healing from his illness in France, must also learn how to protect his wife and family from unimaginable dangers, on unexpected new fronts.
Knowing the cost, they answer the call to serve those most in need. With rising labor unrest, a dark evil taking root within the family, and the invisible menace of the Spanish flu. . . not to mention the uninvited ghosts of war which followed them home. . . it will take their unbreakable bonds of friendship and every ounce of their faith to face the battles ahead of them.
