Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) was a Spanish writer best known for Don Quixote. As a young man he joined the Spanish Navy and continued his military career until his capture by Barbary pirates in 1575. After he was ransomed five years later, Cervantes focused on his literary career and settled in Madrid, where he lived until his death in 1616.
John Ormsby (1829-1895) was an Anglo-Irish translator active in the nineteenth century. He is best known for producing the 1885 English version of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote de la Mancha, which was widely regarded at the time as one of the most precise and scholarly translations of the work.
