Fluorescein angiography is an indispensable tool in modern ophthalmology. It is founded on the evaluation of phenomena related to the behavior intravenously administered sodium fluorescein in the tissues of the ocular fundus.Commonly, texts on fluorescein angiography merely describe the typical pattern, quality, and quantity of the phenomena specific to a variety of vascular and other diseases of the retina and choroid. In contrast, the present book deals with the morphological prerequisites and structural changes on which the individual phenomena are based. This knowledge provides the retina specialist, the general ophthalmologist, and the basic scientist alike with valuable information toward understanding the nature and mechanism of the underlying disorders. The book represents a unique mixture of textbook and atlas, always combining concise statements in English, German, and Spanish on one page with didactically conceived explanatory illustrations on the facing page.
Basic facts.- Optical phenomena.- Mechanical phenomena.- Dynamic phenomena.
Manfred Spitznas M.D. is Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmology. From 1979 to 1981 he served as Wasserman Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Retina Service at UCLA, USA. From 1981 to 2002 he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Bonn, Germany. For his outstanding contributions to both basic science and surgery of the retina and vitreous he has received numerous prestigious awards. Among them are:
The Hermann Wacker Prize of the Club Jules Gonin 1979
Membership of Merit of the Italian Ophthalmological Society 1990
Honorary Membership of the European Association of Vision and Eye Research 2002
The Founders Award of the American Society of Retina Specialists 2004
From the reviews:
"This is a short atlas style text, which sets out to present the underlying basis for the appearances seen on fluorescein angiography in normal and pathological states. ... This is an interesting book that uses many micrographic pictures and diagrams to illustrate the ultrastructure of the retina and choroid and relate this to fluorescein appearances. The pictures and diagrams are of excellent quality." (Rachel Barnes Franzco, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 2006)
"The aim of this multi-language book is to provide an insight into basic phenomena of fluorescein angiography. ... The excellent illustrations are the highlight of this book. ... The book aims to give retina specialists, general ophthalmologists, and basic scientists valuable information on the principles of fluorescein angiography. ... Overall, the book is well-written, concise, and illustrated with excellent material. It is an excellent explanation of the basic mechanics behind fluorescein angiography." (Sebastian Wolf, Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Vol. 145, 2007)
