Pressure on the foot is generally unavoidable and it can vary from a sensation of touch to discomfort to pain. While the sensation of touch provides the necessary sensory feedback for balance and locomotion, discomfort and pain from pressure warn the human body of potentially damaging situations. This book incorporates cutting-edge methodologies for measuring and modeling human perception when pressure is applied on the foot, with special emphasis on pressure thresholds and their relationships with the stimulus characteristics and mechanical properties of foot tissue. This book also provides some insights about human perception of discomfort and pain. It should help researchers and clinical practitioners with an increased understanding of human perception of pressure on the foot. It can also help footwear designers distinguish sensitive foot locations under pressure and then design tissue-compliant footwear products. Furthermore, the invention of automated tissue tester could be used in many clinical practices such as objective evaluating pain treatment, documenting tissue compliance.
