LILIAN R. FURST is Marcel Bataillon Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina, USA. Born in Vienna she escaped Austria in 1939. She was educated in England, and emigrated to the US in 1971. She has published mainly on nineteenth-century European literature, including
