Anthony J. Fitzpatrick, Ed.D., began his career as a public school educator and has spent more than twenty-five years in New Jersey schools since. He has served as an elementary principal and as Director of Innovation for the State of New Jersey, and he currently serves as Assistant Superintendent for two districts: Delsea Regional School District, serving grades 7-12, and Elk Township School District, serving grades PK-6. That vantage point - prekindergarten through graduation, in the same week - is the reason Decoding to Discourse exists in two volumes rather than one.
He is the architect of the Five Engines of Literacy, the framework at the center of this series, which organizes reading and writing instruction around knowledge, word, sentence, structure, and argument, with metacognition and transfer running through all five. The framework was built and refined in the classrooms and PLCs of the districts he leads, not in a laboratory.
Fitzpatrick serves as School Leadership Advisor for Drexel University¿s ALLIED Hub, where his work sits at the intersection of literacy research, policy, and practice. He also teaches in educational leadership at the doctoral level, where he chairs dissertations for practitioner-scholars.
He is also the author of The Evolving Science of Reading. Learn more at anthonyfitzpatrick.com.
