In April of 1945, Dr. Doll and his wife Alma live in Prenzlau, a small city in Eastern Germany, awaiting the end of the Nazi regime . He becomes mayor after the Russians liberate his town, but he soon becomes disillusioned. He moves with his wife to Berlin, a city devastated by the war. In the months that follow, the couple must deal with both a complete sense of loss and the need to trust in a better future.
