The Nightingale is a phenomenon that has enthralled a generation of readers.
This story is about what it's like to be a woman during the war when women's stories are all too often forgotten or overlooked . . . Vianne and Isabelle are two sisters who we follow through World War II in German-occupied France.
With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the story of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path towards survival, love and freedom in war-torn France. It is a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women.
It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.
'Movingly written and plotted with the heartless skill of a Greek tragedy, you'll keep turning the pages until the last racking sob'
Daily Mail
'I loved The Nightingale . . . great characters, great plots, great emotions, who could ask for more in a novel?'
Isabel Allende, bestselling author of The House of the Spirits
'Beautifully written . . . packed with action and emotion'

In the end the story fell into place. But it was hard to read at times. The Nightingale is a story about two french sisters in the second world war. The sisters couldn't be more different from each other, and therefore you have to stories in the books, following both lives parallel. While the main part of the book was difficult to get through at times, I couldn't stop reading because I needed to know who the woman from the beginning was. The story was built such, that the reader gets the first imput from 1995 which is followed by the story of the war. The mystery of which sister it must be, kept me going, and by the end, everything fell into place in such a moving way that there was even a tear or two.Kristin Hannah's writing brings struggle and resilience of the characters to life. Although it was heavy at times, i am happy that i finished the book. It was truely a beatiful story which could have been a bit more compact.
