a sauropod dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic period of China. It is
known from incomplete remains, but probably reached about 17 meters (56
ft) in length. The type species was Yuanmousaurus jiangyiensis,
described by Lu Junchang et al. It is possibly closely related to
Patagosaurus; and placed in a more basal position than Euhelopus but a
more derived position than Omeisaurus. Sauropoda, or the sauropods, are
an infraorder of saurischian ("lizard-hipped") dinosaurs. They are
notable for the enormous sizes attained by some species, and the group
includes the largest animals to have ever lived on land. Well-known
genera include Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus, and Apatosaurus (which, under
current classification, is a senior synonym of Brontosaurus). Sauropods
first appeared in the late Triassic Period, where they somewhat
resembled the closely related (and possibly ancestral) group
Prosauropoda.
