Harriet Ann Jacobs (1813-1897) was born into slavery in Edenton, North Carolina. After years of sexual harassment and threats from her enslaver, she escaped and spent nearly seven years hidden in a cramped attic before reaching the North. Writing under the name Linda Brent, she published Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl in 1861 and later worked as an abolitionist and relief organizer.
