Juvenilia son las obras de juventud de Jane Austen, escritas desde 1787, cuando tenía tan sólo once años, hasta 1793, cuando tenía diecisiete. El temor de que la singularidad y la aguda ironía de estos escritos juveniles pudieran dañar la imagen de la escritora impidió su difusión durante mucho tiempo, pero tras las primeras publicaciones a principios del siglo XX, Virginia Woolf expresó su sorpresa y admiración por ellos. La mayoría son relatos cortos, pero Austen también escribió el comienzo de lo que podría haberse convertido en una novela completa, 'Catharine o el cenador', así como bocetos dramáticos, poemas y algunas piezas de ensayo. Sorprendentemente sofisticados e inventivos, estos escritos se publican ahora por primera vez en su versión completa en español; una colección valiosa, además de muy entretenida, que nos conduce al talento primigenio de una autora irrepetible.
Jane Austen's early works, written between 1787, when she was just eleven, and 1793, when she was seventeen, were long suppressed by fears that the singularity and sharp irony of these youthful writings might damage the author's image. However, after their initial publication in the early 20th century, Virginia Woolf expressed her surprise and admiration for them. Most are short stories, but Austen also wrote the beginning of what could have become a full-fledged novel, "Catharine, or the Bower," as well as dramatic sketches, poems, and a few essays. Surprisingly sophisticated and inventive, these writings are now published for the first time in their complete Spanish version; a valuable and highly entertaining collection that reveals the early talent of a truly unique author.
