In 1864, the family dissipated due to Charles' developing liquor addiction, and the children were briefly housed across Edinburgh. Arthur stayed with Mary Burton, the aunt of a companion, at Liberton Bank House on Gilmer ton Road and continued studying at Newington Academy. Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan was a British essayist and doctor. He was the man behind the creation of the famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for 'A Study in Scarlet'.
