Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish writer and physician best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, one of the most influential characters in the history of detective fiction. Through Holmes and his companion Dr. John Watson, Conan Doyle helped establish many of the conventions of the modern detective story, combining observation, deduction and scientific reasoning with compelling mysteries and memorable adventures. Beyond the Sherlock Holmes stories, Conan Doyle wrote historical novels, science fiction, adventure stories, plays, poetry and non-fiction. His works include A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Lost World and numerous collections of Sherlock Holmes stories.
