Despite little recognition of her importance and quality in her lifetime (in fact, it wasn t even known that she was the author of her novels until after he death so strong was the prejudice against women writers) Austen s work has undoubtedly, stood the test of time. In fact her novels seem as fresh, relevant and true as they were in the early 19th century when they were written. Two hundred years after the first publication of, arguably her masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice might be a good time to look at her heritage and evaluate her impact on current artistic and social mores.
Born into the large family of a country clergyman there was little remarkable about Jane s upbringing, though she was well-educated and encouraged to read and be creative. What she must have been doing that was remarkable, especially for the time, was observing and developing a healthy cynicism about the social structure and manners of the age and deciding quite early in her life that is deserved only parody and mocking, however gentle and subtly delivered.
While Jane s family would have been quite low on the social scale the fact her father was a clergyman would have opened some doors to the family that might otherwise have been firmly closed on them. This gave Jane the opportunity to experience first-hand how the social interactions of the day worked in practice and to watch, albeit from a distance perhaps, the effects and characteristics it produced, especially in the young people.
Jane Austen continued to write what might almost be seen as observational comedy today through her own illness to her untimely death at 42. Social sensibilities and necessity meant that she could never be overt in her criticism or parody. She was too close to the subjects and too dependent on the goodwill of others to be able to be openly critical. But it is the subtle nuances of her social comment that really stand her apart. She doesn t indulge in Dickens caricatures or Wilde s exaggerated manners. It is all understated and implied; and in that lies her true genius.
Perhaps that is why, 200 hundred years on, her work still appeals to a broad spectrum of society. Consumers are more sophisticated and worldly-wise nowand can usually recognizesatire when they see it. But Austen s world is not populated with absolute heroes and villains -just flawed and sometimes quietly desperate people who make mistakes but, ultimately get it right. And maybe that is still what we all want.

Der Klassiker aller Liebesgeschichten!
Elizabeth Bennet, die zweite der fünf Bennet Töchter, lebt mit ihrer Familie während des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts in England. Eines Tages zieht der wohlhabende und gutaussehende Mr. Bingley mit seiner Schwester Caroline und seinem besten Freund Mr. Darcy auf sein Anwesen ein. Allein diese Tatsache erregt ein großes Aufsehen und als er dann auch noch einen Ball veranstaltet sind alle Heiratswilligen Mädchen ausser sich vor Begeisterung. Während des Balls lernt Mr. Bingley auch die Bennet Mädchen kennen und er interessiert sich schnell für Elizabeth's ältere Schwester Jane, während sein Freund, der stolze Mr. Darcy, zunächst als arrogant und unnahbar wahrgenommen wird. Besonders Elizabeth entwickelt eine Abneigung ihm gegen über, da Mr. Darcy sie während des Ball's als 'nicht schön genug' beleidigt und abweist. Kurz nach dem Ball reist aber Mr. Bingley, seine Schwester und Mr. Darcy wieder ab und es kommt nicht zu der gewünschten Verbindung zwischen Jane und Mr. Bingley. Dann taucht auch noch der Cousin ihres Vater's Mr. Collins bei den Bennet's auf um sich bei ihnen eine Braut zu suchen, und er möchte zunächst Jane heiraten, allerdings rät ihm Mrs. Bennet davon ab, da sie sich weiterhin eine Verbindung mit Mr. Bingley erhofft. Also macht er darauf hin Elizabeth einen Heiratsantrag den sie aber sofort ablehnt, und er daraufhin ihrer besten Freundin Charlotte heiratet. Im Verlauf erfährt Elizabeth das anscheinend Mr. Darcy seinem besten Freund Mr. Bennet abgeraten hat Jane zu heiraten und Elizabeth Abneigung Mr. Darcy gegenüber steigt. Als sie jedoch mit ihrer Tante und ihrem Onkel das Anwesen von Mr. Darcy besucht erkennt sie immer mehr seinen wahren Charakter und begreift das sie die ihm Gegenüber aufgebauten Vorurteile völlig falsch sind. Gleichzeitig wird deutlich, dass Darcy sich in Elizabeth verliebt hat und er bereit ist, alles zu tun, um sie für sich zu gewinnen. Zum Ende hin überwinden Elizabeth und auch Mr. Darcy ihren Stolz und ihre Vorurteile und Mr. Darcy macht Elizabeth einen Heiratsantrag, den sie sie annimmt, wie auch Mr. Bingley und ihrer Schwester Jane.Aus heutiger Sicht war Jane Austen ihrer Zeit voraus, da das Buch nicht nur eine romantische Geschichtet, sondern auch ziemlich gesellschaftskritisch ist und Themen wie Klassenunterschiede und Geschlechterrollen behandelt werden. Diese Buch ist mein Allerliebster Roman von Jane Austen und ich kann zu hundert Prozent nachvollziehen das die Geschichte heute immer noch so geliebt wird.

Eine wunderschöne Ausgabe
Heute ist der 249. Geburtstag von Jane Austen. Geboren 16.12.1775, gestorben am 18.7.1817."Stolz und Vorurteil" bzw "Pride and Prejudice" ist vermutlich ihr bekanntestes Werk.Und aus diesem Grund gibt es diese wunderschöne Ausgabe vom @anacondaverlagSie ist Qualitativ sehr hochwertig und bleibt beim Original.Eine tolle Gelegenheit, jemandem Jane Austen näher zu bringen, zumindest wenn man englisch lesen kann.Happy Birthday Jane Austen ¿
