Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was an English novelist born in London, the daughter of a haberdasher. She published five novels in seven years, received unheard-of sums for them, then stopped writing entirely at thirty-two and lived quietly for another three decades. Her works include A Sicilian Romance, The Romance of the Forest, The Mysteries of Udolpho, and The Italian.
