Immortal Longings
Unsterbliche, unvergessene Gelüste oder Sehnsüchte darum geht es in diesem Fantasy-Science Fiction-Roman voller moralisch komplizierter Charaktere, voller Intrigen, Gewalt, Schmutz, Hunger, Elend und Überbevölkerung. Nicht nur das Beziehungsgeflecht der Hauptfiguren Anton und Calle bis hin zum rätselhaften Kronprinzen Augustist komplex, inspiriert von Shakespeares Antonius und Cleopatra. Auch die Szenerie der Zwillingsstädte San-Er erinnert an Kowloon Walled City im britischen Hongkong, voller dicht bebauter Slums, gesetzlos, einem Leben in chaotischen Zuständen ursprünglich von China als Militärfort begründet. Neben dieser Stadt voller Extreme entfaltet sich die komplizierte Magie des Körperspringens, Science-Fiction-Elemente vermischt mit der chinesischen Mythologie des Qi als Lebenskraft, einer Seele im Menschen, die bewegt werden kann. In dieser Welt voller Bösewichte und Unordnung, voller Rache, Intrige und Obsession in schnellen Action-Szenen entfaltet sich zwar auch verdrehte Romantik, hinterlässt aber vielleicht auch den Wunsch nach weniger Klaustrophobie und Chaos. Tolle Kreativität und Tiefe in Charakterstudien und Szenerie bei gutem Schreibstil. Doch die Beschreibung all dieser Brutalität, dieser endlosen kriminellen Energie in San-Er muss nicht unbedingt zu einem Lesevergnügen führen.
