The language we use forms an important part of our sense of who we are - of our identity. This book outlines the relationship between our identity as members of groups - ethnic, national, religious and gender - and the language varieties important to each group. What is a language? What is a dialect? Are there such things as language 'rights'? Must every national group have its own unique language? How have languages, large and small, been used to spread religious ideas? Why have particular religious and linguistic 'markers' been so central, singly or in combination, to the ways in which we think about ourselves and others? Using a rich variety of examples, the book highlights the linkages among languages, dialects and identities, with special attention given to religious, ethnic and national allegiances.

Portrait

John Edwards

Since my younger years, I have always been passionate about nature. As a kid, I used to spend hours and hours in my grandma's garden playing with her two dogs, Jimmy and Heart. I remember myself waiting until the end of each school year so that I can spend the entire summer living with my grandparents about 40 miles away from my home town. It's such a pleasure to remember these things...

As I grew older and started thinking more about my future, I decided not to get too much away from the things I used to love and chose a profession that would be as close to my heart as possible. At about 25 years old, I graduated as a public health and agriculture specialist at San Jose State University in California.

And Yes, I did study two specialties at the same time, and even though it was hard, looking back, I still think that it was a very good decision.

I used the knowledge from both of these fields and went through life doing what I love the most- helping people and taking care of their health, as an independent nutrition expert, and using my horticulturist knowledge to build my own dream garden where now I can spend all the fascinating summers and enjoy my free time. But don't get me wrong, the fire inside me is still there at 56...

Just recently, I found my new passion for writing and publishing - sharing my years of knowledge and experience with others. And hopefully reaching thousands, maybe even millions of people who have the desire to live healthy, happy, and wild life. And teach them how to live an active lifestyle and get all the joy and happiness you truly want.

I hope you are going to learn a lot about my content, and it will inspire you to change and make your life better!

Pressestimmen

'Written in a truly interdisciplinary spirit, this rich, lucid and irreverent book on language, culture and politics is bound to win admirers across the humanities and social sciences. Very readable, highly enjoyable, deeply enlightening.' Thomas Hylland Eriksen, Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo 'This wide-reaching book is of admirable clarity in presenting diverse, complex issues ... Edward's opinions ... are clearly explained and reasoned in relation to the scholarly literature and would certainly serve to generate lively debate in a classroom setting and interest scholars of nationalism seeking an introduction to related aspects of sociolinguistics.' Nations and Nationalism 'This volume gives a full overview of key issues, trends and research relating to its title Language and Identity in the following areas: personal identity (both individual and group), language and dialect, gender, religion, ethnicity, nationalism, and language planning and ecology. As such, it provides a useful textbook for students, with study questions and further reading at the end of each chapter.' Carol Sanders, Professor Emeritus, University of Surrey
