This anthology comprises poems in Spanish and English translation by 17 Uruguayan poets (5 of them women) of the 20th century. The most famous poet included is Mario Benedetti, but others, for example, Enrique Fierro, Washington Benavides, Amanda Berenguer, and Circe Maia, will be familiar to scholars. Also included are Jorge Arbeleche, Nancy Bacelo, Luis Bravo, Selva Casal, Rafael Courtoisie, Jorge Meretta, Eduardo Milan, Alvaro Miranda, Marosa di Giorgio, and Salvador Puig. The volume also includes expatriates Alfredo Fressia and Saul Ibargoyen. Haladyna (Ferris State Univ.) has arranged the poems alphabetically by author and appends biographies and bibliographical references at the end. The bibliographical information and the inclusion of the original Spanish texts make this an important book. Few of these poems have appeared in English before, and the translations are excellent...Summing Up: Recommended. CHOICE
